Considering Dating Websites Print E-mail
Tuesday, 02 January 2007
Singles, looking for a mate, are flocking to dating websites. There are many dating websites to choose from and the first thing you'll need to consider is how these sites work, so you can choose one that might work for you.  Most dating websites allow you to create a free personal profile, put it online, and then browse through their hundreds or thousands of online profiles to see if someone else's profile sparks your interests. The 'catch' is you must register with the website (and pay a fee) to either be contacted by someone who saw your profile and is interested in "meeting" you or to contact someone who's profile caught your eye. With these types of dating websites, even if you do register you still might not be able to contact 'that special someone' you saw online unless they are also registered.

To get around that 'first-contact' obstacle, some dating websites allow you one or two free contacts (called "winks") just so you can let someone know that you are interested in meeting them -- this encourages them to register so the relationship can get started.  Many other dating websites require that all the participants register before putting their profiles online; this eliminates all the obstacles.

Finally, one highly-publicized dating website rejects the online profile approach and instead allows you to fill out a free personality profile that they will use (after you pay your fee) to select your "perfect mate." This high-tech approach has resulted in many permanent relationships and is, in a way, a new alternative to the "dating game."

Dating Websites: There are many dating websites on the Internet so how do you know how to choose the right dating websites for you?  There are a number of different steps you can take to ensure that you get the most out of dating websites.  From personal recommendations to taking advantage of a free dating website demonstration, you’ll have little trouble making the most of your online dating experiences when you know what to look for ahead of time.

Finding online dating websites is the easy part of your task because there are so many.  Defining which dating websites will meet your needs is another task entirely.  You should find three or four sites that really peak your interests and then compare what the dating websites offer you.  Find out if the site charges you to use their services or if their services come with no charges.  See if your privacy is maintained and review their dating search options: can you find a potential dating match by looking for your personal preferences?  Can you make contact with like minded individuals while still maintaining your personal email as private?  While online dating can be fun, it is necessary to protect yourself.  Remember that you are dealing with new people: new people that haven’t earned your trust yet.  Ideally, a dating website will do everything it can to protect your personal information.

Ask friends if they have ever used dating websites.  Some of the best recommendations can come from your personal acquaintances.  Your friends can advise you about their experiences and how the dating websites they used work.  Short of asking friends, you will need to conduct an online search and weed out the best sites from the dating websites you discover.  Give some of the free demonstrations and trial offers a shot: you may find that you really like the services offered by the site.
